SUGAR CANE
Dressed, ready for school.
Mum making puff puff…
‘Bye bye ma’
Looked with a strange eye
Something is wrong, I know…
Quickly, I rushly removed my uniform.
Only Shirt, though;
Left with the inner wear
‘Na God save your yansh dis morning’
‘Abi na your head master dey pay d fees on top your head?’
Show-glass loaded. On my head it landed.
Oh, hot! One of the reasons
I’m half bald.
I saw Yusuf on his way.
‘You will be late again’
I ignored. He can’t understand.
It’s 10AM. Goods finished.
Praised by mummy.
Given twenty naira.
Headed to school…
‘Aboki! Aboki! wait’,
My love for sugar cane.
Bought some with half of my money,
It kept me busy till school gate.
‘Thank God, no teacher outside’
Trying to be smart.
‘Hello, smart boy’
Such a croaky voice.
Oh! Mr. Sugar cane…
Come taste the sweetness of my cane.
I can’t tell him I’ve had some,
My hate for sugar cane.
I was lashed.
Blood, sweat and tears mixed in my heart.
In class, I found the remaining sugar cane right in my bag.
Should I eat it?
I love-hate SUGAR CANES.
